Sometimes, the best nature has to offer for your skin can come from the everyday things we take for granted.

If you’ve ever visited Australia, you’d be more than aware of our love for Papaya. We Aussies use Papaya (or Paw Paw as we like to call it!) for just about everything – from creating delicious fruit salads and desserts, to use as a treatment for chapped lips, dry skin, to heal wounds and soothe itchy insect bites. What you may not realize is just how many other benefits this wondrous fruit has to offer for your skin!

Discover one of nature’s most extraordinary fruit extracts – Papaya.

Packed with benefits

Part of the Caricaceae family, the Papaya (scientifically known as Carica Papaya L.) is a sweet, moist and fibrous fruit that’s not only delicious in flavour but packed full of surprising benefits for your skin!

Native to the central Americas, Papaya trees enjoy warm, humid tropical climates (who wouldn’t!) Here in Australia, the trees have been growing in the tropics of Queensland for over 100 years after they were introduced for their many medicinal properties. Early world explorer Christopher Columbus named them the ‘fruit of the angels’ and we can totally see why!

Papaya fruits are enjoyed all over the world in salads, fruit bowls and desserts – but what exactly are the benefits to your skin?

8 benefits of Papaya for your skin

1. Naturally exfoliate dead skin

No need to scrub! The flesh of the Papaya fruit contains high levels of Papain – a proteolytic plant enzyme which breaks down proteins and provides an exfoliative effect to the skin. By removing the top layer of dead skin cells, skin will appear brighter, smoother and more even. A much gentler way to exfoliate, especially if you have sensitive skin!

2. Lighten and brighten skin

Even if you’re fond of your tan, natural skin lightening can help your skin to appear more youthful by evening the complexion. Alongside exfoliation, the Papain enzyme naturally lightens the skin tone, fades scars and dark spots and even reduces blemishes – giving your skin a more even, brighter appearance.

3. Hydrate and rejuvenate skin

Papaya fruit is over 80% water, meaning that direct application will most certainly help to quench thirsty skin! Papain also aids skin renewal by removing dead cells and promoting new cell growth, whilst vitamins A and C are vital for skin cell rejuvenation. Remove the old to give way for the new!

4. Fade scars

As it gently removes layers of dead skin cells, the Papain enzyme promotes skin renewal which helps to fade scars by reducing scar tissue and encouraging the grow of fresh new cells. Its skin lightening properties can also reduce the appearance of scars by creating a more even skin tone and complexion.

5. Antioxidant rich to protect your skin

One serving of Papaya fruit provides over 140% of your recommended daily amount of Vitamin C, that’s more than an orange! Vitamin C is a potent nutrient antioxidant which, combined with high levels of carotenes (plant pigments) and flavonoids, fends off free radicals that can damage healthy skin cells – leading to dark spots, blemishes and signs of premature aging. These high levels of antioxidants also help to protect your skin against damage caused by UV rays and pollution by creating a natural barrier – protecting your skin throughout the day no matter what the conditions (read more about anti-pollution skincare here).

6. Fight the signs of aging

Packed full of essential vitamins A, C and E, Papaya helps to boost collagen production which promotes skin firmness and elasticity – helping to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and keep your skin suppler for longer. Its high levels of antioxidants protect the skin against free radical damage caused by harsh environmental factors, holding premature aging at bay. To add to this, vitamin E and carotenoids also help to reduce dark circles and puffiness under the eyes, whilst Papain smooths and brightens to complexion for a more youthful appearance.

7. Reduce blemishes

Papain helps to reduce blemishes by removing the top layer of dead skin cells – preventing the build up of dirt and oils that cause breakouts. It also has incredible anti-inflammatory benefits to soothe irritated skin and reduce redness often associated with breakouts; and brightens and evens the complexion to reduce the appearance of acne scars.

8. Goodness from the inside out

Last but not least, if you want to accelerate all of these incredible benefits, add some Papaya into your diet to help your skin from the inside out! Full of essential vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, eating your daily dose of Papaya will help to boost your immune system, aid your gut and give your skin and hair that awe-worthy glow.
