It’s always such an amazing experience to encounter pure and unique raw materials and we want to share their benefits through our skincare formulas.

The Kakadu Plum is one of nature’s best kept secrets… come and discover this little Australian gem.

Small but powerful

What benefits does the word ‘plum’ evoke to you? Each culture has a different use for them.

Well, our Australian Kakadu Plum is a little different. The small but mighty plum gained its superfood status for a very good reason. It’s all down to the Vitamin C!

Otherwise known as the Gubinge or Billygoat Plum, the Kakadu Plum is most famous for its incredibly high amounts of Vitamin C. This tiny plum has the highest concentration of Vitamin C of any known fruit in the world. That’s over 100 times more than an orange. And that’s only the beginning of this little fruit has to offer!

A true Aussie fruit

Despite being compared to the European gooseberry in appearance and taste (small and tart!) the Kakadu Plum is most certainly an Aussie fruit. Enjoyed for thousands of years by native Australians, the Kakadu Plum has recently seen a revival in popularity and we can see why!

The plum trees grow in what may seem uninhabitable land in the hot, humid north-west of Australia. These harsh and sometimes unbearable conditions play an important role for the growing of the fruit and thankfully you don’t have to suffer these harsh conditions to enjoy them!

Ancient roots

The Kakadu Plum is incredibly versatile and has played an important role in native Australian culture for thousands of years. The plum fruit was both enjoyed as an energy-boosting snack and used in native medicine – if only all medicine tasted so good! Along with the fruit, the sap and bark of the plum trees were used in herbal teas and even applied directly to the skin to aid inflammation and infections, for an all-round life-saving treatment.

Super fruit

Due to its incredible benefits (keep reading to find out) the Kakadu Plum has recently gained ‘superfood’ status but is rarely eaten as a fruit. More popularly, the fruits are blended up into powdered health supplements, so you can enjoy them in your smoothie bowls and shakes with no peeling or chopping in sight – phew! Natural oils can also be extracted from the fruit and added into your favourite skincare products to give amazing benefits to your skin – you’ll wish you found it sooner!

Fountain of youth

So, what’s all the fuss about Vitamin C? Well, it’s great for wrinkles for starters. Vitamin C boosts collagen which helps to retain skin’s elasticity and firmness, slowing down the hands of time. This powerful vitamin also brightens skin’s appearance and evens complexion by fading dark spots and acne scars. Firm, even and bright skin – what more could you ask for?!

Hello immune system!

The Kakadu Plum’s high levels of Vitamin C pack an immune-boosting punch. The vitamin is known for tissue repair, enzyme function and keeps your immune system ticking along nicely. Want glowing skin and shiny hair? Just another a great reason to grab yourself some Vitamin C!

Still think blueberries are the superheroes of the fruit world? Maybe we can change your mind, as Kakadu Plums contain more than 5 times the antioxidant levels of blueberries! Antioxidants help your body to say goodbye to free radicals (the nasties) and hello to great health. Time to add Kakadu Plums to your shopping list.

Lots of Antioxidants

Remember we mentioned the importance of harsh growing conditions? Well, these conditions encourage the plum trees to develop a range of strong defence mechanisms to aid their survival, leaving the Kakadu Plum fruits packed with a diverse range of antioxidants – lucky for us!

Vitamin C is known as a nutrient antioxidant, important in helping reduce the number of free radicals in the body to keep you healthy on the inside. When applied directly to the skin, these powerful antioxidants help to protect against free radical damage caused by harsh environmental factors. Protecting against pollution and UV rays can help to keep the skin youthful for longer – remember your antioxidants and sunscreen, ladies!

To add to its high levels of Vitamin C, the Kakadu Plum is also rich in Vitamin E, folic acid and carotenoids (plant pigments) which help reduce dark circles and puffiness under the eyes (we can all relate), and both smooth and brighten the skin for a more youthful appearance. Point me to the plum trees!

Bye bye blemishes!

To add to the list of benefits (we know, there’s a lot!) Kakadu Plums are also rich in phytochemicals which provide anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory and anti-viral properties. These natural chemicals (see, not all chemicals are bad) are proven to tackle unwanted blemishes whilst reducing redness, inflammation and soothing your irritated skin – all associated with those annoying breakouts. Working in harmony with antioxidant nutrients, they both repair and protect the skin, giving you multiple benefits in one small dose. Your skin will never look better!

Taking care of our Kakadu plums

Here at KIATA, we’re all about sustainability. That’s why our Kakadu Plums are sustainably sourced from farms in the North West of Australia. Here, the climate provides the perfect conditions for the plum trees to flourish and produce the finest quality fruits for KIATA products. The fruits are picked by hand to minimise any damage caused to the plums or the trees, ensuring the longevity of the trees and therefore maintaining a steady source of income for the farmers. It’s the human touch that matters.

To maintain the incredible benefits from the Kakadu Plum fruits, KIATA uses sustainable extraction processes to obtain essential oil extracts. These plum oils are combined with other incredible ingredients, specifically formulated to provide the best possible benefits for your skin.

Kakadu Plum oil extracts can be found in all of the KIATA skincare range, capturing the best that nature has to offer.
