Perfecting your morning skincare routine for that all-day glow

Do you give your skin all the love it deserves each morning? Whether you’re a perky morning perfectionist or a repetitive alarm snoozer, making time for your skin in the morning could be the difference between having that Insta-worthy glow and a dull, dry complexion that cracks under pressure.
We understand that not all morning routines are the same. Some of us spend our mornings rushing to get little ones ready for school whilst others may perform a spot of yoga to relax (some superwomen do both!) Whatever you prefer, perfecting the basics of your morning skincare routine doesn’t have to be a difficult task.
First thing’s first, set aside enough time to take care of your skin in the morning, including enough time for your products to sink in. Then, you’re ready to start building your skincare routine from the bottom up! We promise, future you will thank you for it!
Here’s some key tips to get you started:

Cleanse

You washed your face last night, so you don’t need to clean it again in the morning, right? Unfortunately, this couldn’t be more wrong. Even if you went to bed with a clean face, oil and dirt can build up on your skin throughout the night, so performing a quick cleanse in the morning is the best way to begin. Start with an oil-based cleanser to gently remove dirt and excess product from the night before. Oil-based cleansers help to keep moisture locked in and leave your skin feeling smooth and soft.
Warm a small amount of cleanser in your hands before massaging into your skin in circular motions. This will not only help to gather all the dirt but also stimulate circulation and awaken your skin. Rinse off with warm water but don’t completely dry your face just yet!

Double Cleanse

Double cleansing is an optional second stage that is growing in popularity. Some people even swear by it, especially those with oily skin that want to make sure all the oil is washed away. Indeed, two gentle washes can be much better for your skin than a single, harsher cleanse – not necessarily leaving your skin tight and dry. If you do want to give it a try, double cleansing can be performed with a cream or water-based cleanser. Choose something gentle and hydrating for the skin, with a low PH and alcohol content.
Gently wash your face (try KIATA’s mousse-like Deluxe Radiance Cream Cleanser with Papaya extract) to remove any leftover dirt and oil on your skin before rinsing with warm water. Once again, pat the excess water from your face but try not to leave your face too dry as your moisturiser is best applied on slightly damp skin!

Tone

Using the right toner not only minimizes your pores but also adds one more chance to catch any remaining dirt on your skin. It can also begin to build a protective barrier, balance out your pH levels and stop your skin from producing excess sebum (that’s the skin’s natural oils). Once again, use a gentle, hydrating toner to prevent drying out your skin and causing irritation. Either sweep across the face using a cotton pad, or gently dab onto your face. Now you’re ready to start applying your serum.

Serum

What kind of serum you opt for will depend on both your skin type and what you’re trying to achieve with your skincare regime. Serums contain concentrated amounts of ingredients to provide the ultimate benefits to your skin in a small dose, and can be targeted at anti-pollution, anti-ageing, brightening or for boosting hydration to help your skin survive the long day ahead.
As a great all-rounder, choose a serum high in antioxidants and Vitamin C. Free radicals caused by harsh environmental factors such as pollution and UV rays damage skin cells which can lead to blemishes, inflammation and premature ageing – no thanks! Antioxidants not only help to fight off free radicals but also protect against them throughout the day by creating an additional barrier on the skin’s surface.
Essential nutrients such as Vitamin C help to repair and restore the skin’s natural barrier whilst brightening and smoothing the skin’s complexion in the process. Vitamin C boosts collagen – an essential protein needed to retain skin’s firmness and elasticity – meaning that your skin will appear more youthful for longer.
Serum only needs to be lightly applied to the skin after toning (good news since they’re usually pretty pricey!) Let the serum fully absorb before applying your moisturiser or day cream.

Moisturise

After a long day of exposure to the environment, your skin can become dry and dehydrated. To prevent this, begin your morning with a hydrating moisturiser or day cream to lock in moisture for as long as possible. Day creams and moisturisers should be nourishing enough to keep your skin hydrated all day, but non-comedogenic and non-oily to prevent blocked pores and too much shine. KIATA’s Secret Infusion Day Cream fuses a lightweight formula of Kakadu Plum, White Horehound and Hyaluronic Acid to help even the complexion, plump and hydrate the skin while protecting it from pollutants – a perfect addition to your morning routine!
Dab a small amount of product around your face and blend in gentle circular motions until fully absorbed. Applying your day cream or moisturiser this way prevents the build-up of product and excess oils around your hairline which can lead to blemishes. Once your face has been nourished, don’t forget about your neck and décolletage – these key areas need hydration too!

SPF

Protecting your skin against sun exposure should be one of the most important steps in your skincare regime. Not only does sun exposure cause sun spots and premature ageing, it can also lead to more serious conditions such as skin cancer. No matter what season or climate, your skin needs to be protected against the sun on a daily basis through the use of SPF.
Usually, SPF needs to be applied after toning and before moisturising as it needs to soak into your skin and interact with your skin cells, at least 20 minutes before sun exposure. However, if you’re opting for a serum with concentrated amounts of Vitamin C, it may be best to apply your SPF afterwards since high levels of Vitamin C can make your skin more sensitive to sun exposure.
